around palm beach

After visiting Palm Beach many times over the years, I've decided the island is one of my favorite, more charming, places around the States. I love the architectural aesthetic be it Mizner's Mediterranean Revival, the work of Maurice Fatio, Marion Sims Wyeth (who worked at Carrère & Hastings before opening his own firm) or John L. Volk who was very versatile but it seems largely practiced Georgian-Revival. Anyways here are a few snapshots and architectural details from around town.

I agree with you, what a wonderful area. First of all was that beautiful drive up Highway 1, through Boca Raton, Delray Beach, etc. Palm Beach itself is the perfect place to stroll around and shop, or stop in the historic Breakers Hotel (also built by Henry Flagler). Another favorite is the Norton Art Museum, a perfect gem.

What a lovely town, I'm so sad I never made it there last year while in Florida. I hope I like Seaside as well -booked the cottage and flights today!

@ Parnassus, that is my favorite drive in FL! You can drive all the way up the coast and it is scenic and beautiful the whole way up A1A! The Breakers is interesting, as I understand it the original was destroyed by fire (possibly twice if memory serves) and then rebuilt by a family member in the 30's (don't quote me) to exacting specifications to be like the original, only fire proof.

@Stefan, you are going to LOVE Seaside, I just know it. Congrats on getting your vacation booked! And it is never too late to go down there, there is always the next trip :)

@ Karena, I'm so glad you love it. Isn't that tile work gorgeous?! And it was everywhere: framing windows, fountains, fences, stairs. You should see the ironwork too, you would swoon!
