back doors

I'm still unpacking (I'm very slow about these things these days) and sorting through photos. However, on my flight home I was catching up on some reading and found this lovely line in the very last pages of My Antonia by Willa Cather: "...in farm-houses, somehow, life comes and goes by the back door."

It got me thinking about these lovely spaces.

Don't you just love Gil Schafer's work?

Willa Cather is a very architecturally-aware author. The photos you selected show the ideal mood of back entrances, leading directly to the functional heart of the house.

love all of these! It's funny but in the best houses (best DESIGNED houses) - the architect / designer takes into account how the family lives and makes the back door / garage door -as inviting as the front door (which is so rarely used).

So true! We use our back door / mud room entry way more than the front. Wished we made it bigger.
Cheers,
